North Carolina Golf Course Owners Announces New Administrative Team

The North Carolina Golf Course Owners Association has retained Mr. David Norman of Norman and Associates to serve as the Executive Director for the group.  Norman and Associates is headquartered in Manakin-Sabot, VA and brings a wealth of association management experience to the table.  They currently administer NGCOA Mid-Atlantic as well as several other prominent golf related associations in the Virginia/Maryland/DC area.  Norman worked for the Carolinas Golf Association earlier in his career.

The North Carolina Golf Course Owners Association is an affiliate of the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA), headquartered in Charleston, SC.  The NGCOA exists to make member facilities more productive, efficient and profitable, through advocacy, education, group purchasing programs and networking opportunities.

The North Carolina Golf Course Owners Association will be seeking to expand the Board of Directors, which currently includes:

  • President Del Ratcliffe, Ratcliffe Golf Services, Charlotte, NC
  • Christian Anastasiadis, McConnell Golf, Raleigh, NC
  • Scott Knox, Verdict Ridge Golf & Country Club, Denver, NC
  • Kelly Miller, Pine Needles / Mid Pines, Pinehurst, NC
  • Mark Stewart, Tobacco Road, Sanford, NC

Norman and Associates will be building on a number of state-level initiatives that have been designed to help golf course owners and operators in the management of their properties.  The Association currently represents 138 member facilities of the North Carolina GCOA, and the incoming team will work aggressively to recruit more member facilities.

President Del Ratcliffe remarked, “We are excited to bring a new level of service to golf course owners and operators in North Carolina, with the establishment of a permanent office and staff to serve members.  We will focus on improving the business of golf throughout the Tarheel state, and this will include advocacy efforts in Raleigh and Washington.  We are building a strong board to direct our effort to maximum influence, and we are particularly pleased to have David Norman and Tyler Eastham on board.”

“We are looking forward to the renewed energy and positive momentum this move will bring to our affiliate in North Carolina,” said NGCOA CEO Jay Karen.  “I am impressed by the cohesiveness and collaboration of allied golf organizations in North Carolina.  The NGCOA is proud to grow our presence and continue advocating on behalf of the golf industry in North Carolina.”

One hot issue with NCGCOA is property tax valuation. In North Carolina, property taxes are assessed “ad valorem”, which means “by market value”.  Golf courses in particular are extremely difficult to accurately appraise, and methods for appraisal vary across the state.  Tax assessors sometimes utilize replacement cost valuations which can result in wide variations from actual market value.  The North Carolina GCOA is actively working on a standardized method which would assist in more accurate market valuations for golf courses, allowing course owners to achieve an equitable tax assessment of their property.  WE NEED YOUR HELP IN THIS EFFORT!!  If you have had issues with the valuation of your golf course for tax purposes, we need to hear from you.  Courses may share their stories on this issue by contacting our office directly. There is strength in numbers, and by working cohesively as a group we can best represent the interests of golf course owners across the state.  We invite owner/operators to click here and join today!
