June Weather Impact, Surprising Downer CC

June Golf Weather Impact:

An Unexpected Downer

June’s results caught us by surprise as Golf Playable Hours (GPH) were down compared to the same month last year (with both lagging the 10-year norm). That basically kept us even for the Year-to-Date (YtD) results (+1%) but remembering that last year as the benchmark is a pretty low hurdle. YtD regional GPH breadth remains neutral at 1:1 with 15 favorable regions countered by 19 unfavorable regions (with 11 in the neutral zone of +/- 2% with all regions now in full swing). Looking at weather impact performance by day-of-week for the YtD period, it's all over the board both by weekparts (weekday vs. weekend) and dayparts (Mon-Sun) with, unfortunately, Friday and Saturdays being the "biggest losers" (ouch). The lone encouraging weather figure is that the Year-End (YE) forecast strengthened slightly vs. the May reading (our subscribers know this number, everyone else will have to either guess or order one of our weather impact reports/services (see link below) to put you “in the know”).

Played Rounds data for May published by Golf Datatech registered down following our previously-reported GPH decline but, encouragingly, beat the weather decline so Utilization showed a gain for the month. That also shored up the YtD Utilization figure which is now within sight of being flat for the year. As always, beneath this national picture, there are winners and losers in both Played Rounds and Utilization Rates among the 61 key Markets (including Pellucid's designated Top 25 markets) and this next-level-detail of results is also available to Pellucid Publications members and Geographic Weather Impact report subscribers.

Jim Koppenhaver comments, "I have to admit I didn't see that one coming. Last June's GPH number wasn't anything to write home about so I thought we'd lap it pretty easily this year and finish the first half on an upswing. Instead we get a decline which will likely beget a negative figure for rounds when they're released next month and we'll exit the 1st half of '19 once again in the red. Crap. The Utilization figures are once again the silver lining in the (literal) cloud as rounds demand stubbornly resists poorer-than-anticipated weather through six months. Among Pellucid's Top 25 US Golf Markets for the YtD period, Philly and Minneapolis are the leading gainers in Utilization while Dallas and Detroit unseated last month's leading laggards. Again, if you want to know which of our Top 25 Golf Markets posted Utilization gains, how much and what the diagnostics are behind those gains, just go to our website and get on the Monthly Weather Impact subscription or sign up for Cognilogic (facility-level access via the web)."
